HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — The Art League of Henderson County will feature mixed-media artist Mary Alice Braukman during its September exhibition, on view September 4–30 at Art Place Gallery in Hendersonville. The public is invited to meet the artist and celebrate the opening at a reception Friday, September 4, from 5–7 p.m.
Braukman explores what she describes as the alchemy of mixed media, creating richly layered works where color, collage, texture and found objects come together through an intuitive process of discovery. Rather than beginning with a predetermined destination, she allows each work to evolve as materials are added, obscured, uncovered and transformed.
“Art keeps me curious—every brush stroke, every layer is a whisper of something new waiting to be discovered,” Braukman says. “The joy is in doing . . . and I can’t wait to see what happens next.”
Her approach reflects the idea of life as a flowing river—constantly changing and never quite the same from one moment to the next. Each new canvas or sheet of paper becomes an opportunity for exploration and transformation.
“My work is my diary—a record of my journey,” Braukman says. “The act of painting is what interests me most. My process is intuitive, recording my personal experiences. I work in mixed media, collage and layering, with a focus on texture and the unearthing of paints combined with objects found along paths. I simply must do art—it is my way of being.”
An artist and teacher, Braukman brings that sense of curiosity and experimentation to each piece. Individual works develop their own visual language while collectively reflecting the artist’s personal journey and continuing fascination with the creative process.
As part of the Art League’s Art for Lunch series, Braukman will also present an artist talk on Wednesday, September 16, from noon–1 p.m. at Art Place Gallery. The program is free and open to the public and offers an opportunity to hear directly from Braukman about her creative process, use of mixed media and the inspiration behind her work.
The exhibition runs September 4–30, 2026, at Art Place Gallery, 730 Locust Street, Hendersonville. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m.–4 p.m. The opening reception and Art for Lunch artist talk are free and open to the public.
